You might think that you’re above the basic b*tch label if you have an aversion to pumpkin spice lattes , rosé wine , Fiat 500s and avo on toast. But if you’re planning on tucking into this iconic snack this summer, you might just be as ‘ringarde’ as Emily in Paris herself. Come summertime, there’s nothing better than a bowlful of fresh strawberries and cream.

Not only is the dish incredibly tasty, indulgent and refreshing, the winning combination has become synonymous with Wimbledon . And while the tennis tournament exudes luxury and is often associated with royalty and A-listers, there’s actually a pretty basic reason why strawberries and cream are historically linked to the Championships. Essentially, it seems to boil down to this: It was considered ‘trendy’ to eat strawberries when Wimbledon first began, and the fruit happened to be available at the right time.

The pros over at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club aren’t 100% certain about the origins of strawberries and cream at the event, as there isn’t enough historical information about it, but they believe that the famous foodie pairing has been linked to the tournament since at least the early 1900s. Some speculate that strawberries may have even been enjoyed as far back as the very first Wimbledon Championships in 1877, although this is not confirmed. Back then, strawberries would have been considered somewhat of a luxury as the berries had a short growing season and would only have been available.
