GREENVILLE — A traveling exhibit featuring portraits of a world-famous artist has arrived in the Upstate. The Upcountry History Museum is displaying nearly 50 portraits of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo through Oct. 13.
The exhibit, " Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray ," which has been shown across the world, includes pictures of Kahlo, handwritten letters and other historical artifacts. Email Sign Up! The images were captured over a nine-year period by Murray, a fashion and celebrity photographer well-known for his " iconic " portraits of Kahlo. They were close friends who had an on-and-off romantic relationship.
"Most people are familiar with Kahlo’s self-portraits, but Muray’s photographs take visitors on a visual journey of Kahlo’s passion for her Mexican heritage and the people significant to her during her life," Upcountry History Museum CEO Dana Thorpe said. Many of Muray's images were discovered after his death in 1965. The exhibit didn't come to life until the 2000s through the Nickolas Murray Archives.
Since then, it has traveled across the world to Toronto, Italy and the San Diego area. The Upcountry History Museum spent multiple years trying to secure the photographs, which are circulated by GuestCurator Traveling Exhibitions . Now, it's the first time the exhibition will show in South Carolina, according to GuestCurator.
"We are honored to be the first to bring this introspective, one-of-a-kind experience to South Carolina,” Thorpe said. Orig.
