(Image: Getty) This little-known holiday destination - La Palma, part of Spain’s Canary Islands - is characterised by black beaches and volcanic rock following a devastating volcanic eruption in 2021 which covered the island in clouds of dark smoke, flows of lava and piles of ash. As the lava rolled down La Palma ’s west coast, 7,000 residents were forced to evacuate.
The Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge continued to erupt for 85 days - the longest on record for the island. This was the seventh recorded episode since 1470. The flow, which peaked at four miles long and two miles wide, covered over 2,500 acres and destroyed everything in its path, including homes, churches, farming land and schools.
In total, 1,345 homes and 16 schools were destroyed. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.
