What isn’t so satisfying, however, is varying prices of washing detergent. Though a necessity, the prices can border on feeling luxurious. We’ve looked at seven of the most well-known options available, including an ecologically sound brand, to see if any discounts could be found and whether being store loyal pays off.

Across the board, there wasn’t a significant discrepancy between prices. Yes, it will help if you have a Tesco Clubcard or Sainsbury’s Nectar card, slicing pounds off in a few cases on price per item. Ecover and Persil both have savings of £3 and £2 respectively if you’re buying in Tesco and using your Clubcard.

While the other differences in price in Tesco are £1 and under, if you’ve got multiple loads of washing to do, you’ll get through those packs fairly quickly, meaning the savings will add up. And while we’ve chosen a select few items, it isn’t to say there aren’t deals for brands offering different wash amounts. In Sainsbury’s, though, Ariel Platinum Pods cost £7 for 29, but we found that for an additional £1.

50, you get five more pods, with 34 priced at £8.50 if you have a Nectar card, rather than the usual £10. So it’s not rocket science, but shopping around and assessing whether a few more or fewer capsules could save some pennies is worth considering.

Home Bargains isn’t a store we’d normally include in Price Watch. However, as it’s a popular choice for consumers, we felt it was important to see what was available.
