My mother does not share my obsession with fashion. As a child of the ’60s, she claims to have been far more invested in the idea of revolution than personal style. Still, looking back at pictures of her as a young woman, padding around Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park dressed in perfectly distressed flared jeans and a Mongolian sheepskin coat, there’s no denying that her free-spirited way of being had a strong look.
It was women of my mum’s generation – the Anita Pallenbergs, and Janis Joplins – who inspired the likes of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller when had a resurgence in the early noughties. That romantic, carefree mood is very much back in the air (see José Criales-Unzueta’s genius breakdown of the new new boho in the August issue) and embodied so beautifully by , who costars on this month’s cover with her adorable newborn daughter. It’s not the first time Waterhouse has shared top billing in British : almost a decade ago, she posed on the cover with friends and Georgia May Jagger just as her modelling career was taking off.
These days, however, as ’s Olivia Marks discovers, you’re more likely to catch Waterhouse performing at Coachella or nesting at home with her partner, Robert Pattinson, than see her sauntering down a runway at fashion week. With a new album under her belt and a growing family by her side, Waterhouse is coming into her own. Meanwhile, in Paris later this month, the Olympic Games are set to enchant us with an entirely different idea.
