Listen to Story The Japanese anime production company, Studio Ghibli , was recently conferred the prestigious Cannes prize, an honorary Palme d'Or, which is usually handed out to an individual for their contribution to international cinema. However, for the first time in the history of Cannes, a collective is being recognised in this fashion rather than just one person. Studio Ghibli has been churning out one visual feast after another for the past four decades.
Some of its internationally acclaimed movies include names such as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle among more. While co-founder and prolific Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki was unable to collect the award in person, he sent a video message to Cannes jury members expressing his gratitude: "I don’t understand any of this. But thank you.
” The Palme was collected by his son and filmmaker Goro Miyazaki. Hayao Miyazaki's last directorial, The Boy and the Heron , received an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category this year..
