Six privately owned gardens in a small village just outside Ely are opening up this weekend to visitors. With views towards the historic city of Ely and its magnificent cathedral, one ticket gives you access to all the gardens for a beautiful day out. As part of the National Garden Scheme, six gardens in Coveney, are opening this weekend on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.
These gardens include one on School Lane which is a plantsman’s garden. According to National Garden Scheme it has "year-round interest and unusual plants, patio, rock garden and veg plot." Nearby, you will find Hawthorn Cottage which is a cottage garden of bee friendly herbaceous borders, roses, a wildlife pond and bonsai in a shaded patio.
Carrying onto Hey Chapel, you will find roses and wildlife ponds with the cathedral just visible in the distance. The fourth garden in the group is 1a The Green which is a new build house and garden but still has "interesting herbaceous borders and water feature." Across the Green is Toads Acre which has its own Heritage Orchard and mature tree walks with a Potage terrace.
According to National Garden Scheme, on the open days a live quartet will be playing as visitors admire the garden. The final garden, Drovers, is "based on a Chinese pleasure garden philosophy but with English naturalist planting." It is just as beautiful as it sounds, with a wildlife pond beneath mature trees as well as a rose garden and potted terrace.
