Monday, June 3, 2024 South-central Europe is bracing for severe weather conditions, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forecast across much of Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia through at least June 4. These adverse weather conditions are expected to cause significant disruptions to transportation, businesses, and utility services in the affected regions. As of May 20, authorities have issued several warnings to alert the public about the upcoming severe weather.
Orange thunderstorm and heavy rainfall warnings, which are the middle level on a three-tier scale, have been issued for northeastern and southern Croatia, southern and northwestern Hungary, and central and eastern Slovenia for June 3. Yellow warnings have been issued for the rest of Croatia, Hungary, and Slovenia for June 3, and will continue for Hungary and Slovenia on June 4. The severe weather is predicted to bring heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and hail, which could result in flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks.
Urban areas with inadequate stormwater drainage systems are particularly at risk of flooding. Areas downstream from large reservoirs or rivers could experience flash flooding after short periods of intense rainfall. Additionally, landslides are a concern in hilly or mountainous regions where the soil has become saturated.
Authorities may issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone areas in the coming days. There is also a possibility of disruptions to electricity.
