Artists will be using 18th and 19th streets in the ViBe Creative District as their canvas during the first annual VB Street Art Festival. The new event will showcase the live painting of 15 sculptures by 15 artists over the four-day weekend that runs May 30 through June 2. Each multifaceted neighborhood identifier sculpture will be repainted live during the festival.

Artists were selected by the Virginia Beach Public Art committee. Over 50 artwork submissions were submitted from nine countries and seven states. Virginia Beach artist Abby Pawley’s design includes tall yellow anemones with a colorful abstract background.

She said all of her murals are bright and evoke happiness. “The bold bright colors I’ve used are loud and expressive like I believe street art should be,” she said. “I admire street art for always having such a bold statement.

” Cherilyn Colbert’s composition depicts a gathering of seagulls in a whimsical design. The Virginia Beach artist was influenced by the constant presence of seagulls that live on the coast. Her artwork illustrates the coastal characters grouped together to convey a sense of community and curiosity as they look at the viewer.
