The summertime-only beer and wine garden in Golden Gate Park is reopening this season with a new name and fresh menu. The Whale’s Tail — formerly known simply as the Beer and Wine Garden — is scheduled to open on JFK Promenade just in time for Memorial Day weekend, San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department announced in a news release. The garden’s new name is inspired by Street Whale , a nearby public art installation featuring a 49-foot whale, part of which juts out from the asphalt along the promenade.

In a change from previous summers, the drinks menu at The Whale’s Tail is now to include brunch cocktails, along with beer and wine. The watering hole will also feature food trucks, live music, street art and games, according to the department. The effort is being organized by events nonprofit Non Plus Ultra, SF Live , the Recreation and Park Department and Illuminate, the public arts nonprofit behind installations like the Bay Bridge lights .

“For those looking to bask in the beauty of nature and the lively atmosphere of JFK Promenade, The Whale’s Tail is the perfect spot to drop anchor in Golden Gate Park,” Recreation and Park Department general manager Phil Ginsburg said in the news release. The drink garden is slated to be open on weekends and select holidays, including Memorial Day, from 12 p.m.

to 6 p.m. throughout the summer, in the same spot on the JFK Promenade at the 14th Avenue East Meadow.
