The actress and comedian, 57, had small role in the period comedy based on the Jane Austen novel as Bates' Maid, opposite Gwyneth, 51, in the titular role. The part marked Ruth's first screen role and she recalled that she had just two small lines, that were then reduced to just one, which she called 'heartbreaking'.

Speaking on Wondery podcast, Brydon &, with her close friend and Gavin & Stacey co-star Rob Brydon, she added that the movie star had talked down to her on set. Ruth explained: 'I had two lines, I had to announce Gwyneth Paltrow and say, “Miss Woodhouse is here” and then I had to say “Goodbye Miss Woodhouse” at the exit and let her out, and GP cut one of my lines.
