Chandigarh: With 63,418 taxpayers out of 1,08,000 properties paying up, the Municipal Corporation earned a record Rs 50.73 crore property tax during the two-months rebate period this year. Now, the civic body is all set to send recovery notices to over 44,000 taxpayers who did not pay tax.
Now that the rebate period has ended, they will have to pay penalty and interest amount. As the MC also received Rs 1.51 crore garbage charges through property tax from commercial properties, the total received amount reached Rs 52.
24 crore, a 21% rise as compared to the previous property tax collection of Rs 43.21 crore (2023-24) during the two-months rebate period. Of the total Rs 50.
73 crore, Rs 39.51 crore was received under the commercial segment and Rs 11.22 crore under the residential category.
The MC attributed increased tax collection to enhanced taxpayer outreach and awareness campaigns to encourage prompt tax payments and avail of the statutory rebate offered. The authority also focused on streamlining tax assessment and collection processes for improved efficiency. Improved coordination with relevant government agencies and departments also played a vital role in the increased earnings.
