Brits could be unknowingly walking around with rare coins in their pockets that can be worth more money themselves. This is especially true for 50p coins, which can be snapped up for hundreds by avid collectors depending on their condition and mintage. With coins released in the UK by the royal mint, some limited editions pieces are worth more than all the rest.
According to one coin expert, the Kew Gardens 50p is the most sought after and with just 210,000 in circulation, it's easy to see why. To the untrained eye, spotting one can be difficult and there are a few things to look out for to ensure yours is the real deal. Now according to TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard , this is the "rarest" 50p coin to look out for.
In a recent video, the poster, who boasts 143,100 followers, spoke about the Kew Gardens design, reports the Mirror . He said: "The Kew Gardens 50p hit the headlines in February 2014 when it was revealed as the most scarce 50p in circulation. At the peak of the hype surrounding its value, some coins were exchanging hands for hundreds of pounds.
"This coin was reissued in 2019 as part of the 50th anniversary of the 50p celebrations, the 2019 version of this coin was a commemorative issue and did not enter general circulation. A circulated version of the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p can easily sell for £150 today, a graded uncirculated version can sell for double this." The coin design was first launched in 2009 to mark the 250th anniversary of the beautiful Royal Botan.
