Monday, July 1, 2024 Today marked a significant milestone for the Qantas Group as its latest Airbus A220 aircraft touched down in Tasmania for the first time, introducing a new era of passenger comfort and environmental sustainability to the region known as the Apple Isle. The first A220 flight from Melbourne to Hobart arrived at 11:20 am, during which Qantas also revealed plans to construct a brand-new Qantas Club at Hobart Airport. The aircraft, named Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa, honors the artwork of prominent Pitjantjatjara artist Maringka Baker.
Its design is inspired by the Dreaming tale of two sisters who journey across the remote Australian landscape, searching for their homeland. This aircraft is part of the Qantas Group’s initiative to modernize its domestic fleet, gradually replacing the older Boeing 717s with the A220s, which will soon handle up to 26 weekly flights between Melbourne and Hobart. Starting from 12 November 2024, the A220 will also serve the Melbourne-Launceston route.
The A220 stands out for its fuel efficiency, modern cabin design featuring larger windows and expansive overhead compartments, rapid Wi-Fi access, custom seats, and an overall enhanced spatial experience, making it a superior choice for travelers. Additionally, a new long-term partnership with Hobart Airport has been established by Qantas and Jetstar, leading to the development of a new lounge set to open in 2027. This lounge will double the existing capacity and highlight local Tasmania.
