In a nostalgic tribute to the past, Cromars Classic Fish and Chips in St Andrews is celebrating National Fish and Chip Day and the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday 6 June with a special themed day and 1940s-inspired price rollback. National Fish and Chip Day has been moved back to 6 June this year to coincide with the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Honouring this special commemorative event, Cromars - who were crowned Scotland’s best fish supper at the 2023 Scotland’s Fish & Chip Awards - is transporting customers back to 1944 by rolling back the price of a poke chips to £1.94, playing 40’s tunes and donning era-appropriate outfits to get into the wartime spirit. Historically, fish and chips have been inextricably tied to the war effort in Britain.
Following the dish’s peak in popularity in the 1920’s, fish and chips quickly became a national favourite. As a result, when the UK Government introduced its food rationing initiative in January 1940, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill prevented fish and chips from being included; believing that this would dampen morale and be detrimental to the war effort, referring to the pair as ‘good companions’.
