Police asked for the public’s help in identifying the man who argued with a Covina resident last month then fatally shot him in front of his girlfriend and three children. Investigators on Wednesday, July 3, released a composite of the gunman done by the Forensic Imaging Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau. The June 22 shooting, reported to police at 9:35 p.
m., erupted in a grassy area between the victim’s apartment and carports in the 1100 block of East Wanamaker Drive in Covina. The couple and their three children, an 11-year-old girl and 9-year-old twin boys, were walking from the carport toward their apartment when they encountered a man wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and dark pants, Covina Detective Oswaldo Preciado said.
“The suspect walked in between the couple, which startled both of them,” he said. The victim asked the man if he was OK, Preciado said. An argument broke out, which led to the suspect pulling a gun from his waistband and shooting the victim.
The 28-year-old victim died at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. As of Wednesday, the medical examiner’s office had not yet publicly identified him. The gunman ran after the shooting, the detective said.
Police described him as a Latino with a thin build, 20 to 25 years old, and 5 feet, 5 inches tall. Police asked anyone with information about the case to call Detective Preciado at 626-384-5622. Anonymous tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at lacrimesto.
