Saturday, May 25, 2024 Pittsburgh International Airport was bustling ahead of Memorial Day weekend, with AAA predicting it to be one of the busiest travel periods in nearly twenty years. According to AAA, this weekend is projected to be the busiest at airports since 2005, with over three and a half million people flying nationwide. In Pittsburgh, TSA wait times early Friday morning exceeded 20 minutes at their worst.
Jen McDonald from the North Hills took similar precautions, ensuring she had plenty of time before her flight to West Palm. Despite her preparation, she was still a bit surprised by the crowds. Travelers needed patience and a few deep breaths to reach their final destinations.
The busy terminals and extended security lines tested everyone’s endurance. During holiday weekends, Pittsburgh International Airport opens alternate security checkpoints to expedite the TSA process when lines are exceptionally long. These measures aim to manage the increased flow of passengers and reduce wait times during peak travel periods.
