Those questions and more will be answered over the WA Day long weekend when 120 pie-loving speed eaters put themselves — and their stomachs — to the test in the inaugural Mrs Mac’s Pie-Fest pie eating competition at Burswood Park on June 2 and 3. Anyone who has seen the 1986 classic Stand By Me will know that these contests can get very, very messy but Boomers and Perth Wildcats basketball legend Damian Martin and Perth Dude Food influencer Lachie Sheridan reckon they’ve got what it takes to take home a trophy.

Martin planned to spend the weekend before WA Day working on his pie-eating technique. “I do have a big gob, so I might take the all-in approach,” he said. “But if that doesn’t work, I’ll eat it in quarters.

” The six-time National Basketball League champion said he preferred plain steak pies and would be adding “dead horse” during the contest. “It is a race, but I also want to enjoy the pie,” Martin said. Sheridan, who has more than 250,000 followers on Instagram and loves a chunky beef and cheese pie, said he hoped to “inhale the pie like a taco”.

He didn’t plan to waste time adding tomato sauce. “I’m a sauce guy, but I’m competitive,” Sheridan laughed. Ma.
