well, interesting. The Princess of Wales was recently unveiled as the cover star of Tatler magazine’s July issue. Instead of the classic glossy photo you might expect of a front cover, the magazine went for a painting of the royal.
But royal enthusiasts are not at all pleased with the final product, created by British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor. The Princess, who is taking time out of royal duties due to her health, didn’t sit for the painting, so photographs were used as references instead. Painter Hannah shared a statement explaining the painting: ‘When you can’t meet the sitter in person, you have to look at everything you can find and piece together the subtle human moments revealed in different photographs: do they have a particular way of standing or holding their head or hands? Do they have a recurrent gesture?’ The finished piece took inspiration from Kate’s first banquet of the King’s reign, where she wore a dazzling gown and blue sash.
The look was paired with Queen Mary’s tiara and Princess Diana’s famed diamond pearl-drop earrings. While all the details are there, people didn’t think the actual painting looked anything like Kate. Taking to Twitter, now X, royals fans the world over voiced their discontent.
