THOUSANDS of Irish people have been suffering with long Covid symptoms for more than a year. Over 84,000 people in Ireland have shown symptoms for the new illness, with 2.2 per cent of the adult population now suffering from it.

New research has shown that long Covid continues to prevail as 2.2 per cent have experienced symptoms for over a year. The new poll shows that 84,500 were struggling with the condition among adults in Ireland .

Over the last 18 months, there has been a decrease in the numbers with symptoms of long covid for less than a year. Just over two per cent of the population suffered from long Covid symptoms for a period of 12 months or less. The current poll, which was conducted this month, shows that almost a third of adults who suffer from long Covid first developed their symptoms more than two years ago.

This means that 1.3 per cent of the adult population, or 50,000 people suffered from the illness for more than two years. Special leave entitlements for frontline health workers suffering from long is now set to end on June 30 despite this research being carried out.

Calling for changes by the HSE and a revised look into these figures, Denis Naughten said: "The main long COVID symptom experienced continues to be fatigue (reported by 83 per cent of those with long COVID in Nov 2022 and 85 per cent in June 2024).
