There's truth in advertising at the restaurant at 3103 U.S. 12, Michigan City.
It's called Trip's Tree House because it's in an old house with a tree growing inside, jutting through the roof. The recently opened eatery offers an American menu that incudes salads, pastas, seafood and entrees including a mojo chicken orzo, General Manager Caitlyn Caldwell said. It also has some light lunch options.
Trip's Tree House seats about 100 inside and has an expansive outdoor space. "We have unlimited seating outside. We have a huge backyard with sandpits," she said.
The restaurant plans to take advantage of the outdoor space with live music, including regular performances by country and alternative rock bands. It plans to host the 1990s cover band Run Forrest Run on the evening of June 14 for its debut show. It's a family-friendly establishment with a family dining room and a bar with fun drinks.
"We have creative cocktails like a Fireberry Margarita that has a spice and kick to it," Caldwell said. "We have a Mai Tai with a plastic monkey toy hanging off it and an old-fashioned with sassafras." The space is filled with greenery to complement the maple tree, the trunk of which serves as a centerpiece.
"The building was originally a home. The dining room was outside the house in the 1930s but now the tree is inside the building," she said. "They built the building around it.
It's crazy. People love it. It's unique and different.
It wows a lot of people. There's not anything else like it .
