Even though most Niagara-on-the-Lake councillors liked a proposed 800-unit residential development on Taylor Road at the White Oaks Resort and Spa, they rejected the potential gateway project — after seemingly attempting to rejig it on the fly. The proposal by White Oaks Redevelopment is located at 235-253 Taylor Rd. near Glendale Avenue and within the Glendale urban settlement area.
It includes 17- and 21-storey buildings containing a total of 390 residential units, plus 18- and 25-storey buildings with an additional 420 residential units, along with 1,515 square metres of ground floor commercial and retail space. There would also be 1,318 parking surface and underground parking spaces on the 5.85 hectare area.
“White Oaks is ready to take the next step,” Stephen Bedford of LANDx Developments told councillors at their Tuesday committee-of-the-whole meeting. “It will vault Glendale from an isolated, low density (area) into a complete community.” He said the proposal would “encourage” a range of employment uses, “enhance” the transportation network, provide access to area amenities and create a “unique identity” for the community.
