A Devon NHS trust says it is launching an internal investigation after adored Exeter grandmother Lorna England was murdered in February 2023. Cameron Davis, who was convicted of the crime last week, had warned hospital and ambulance staff just hours before the vicious attack that he would kill a "random stranger" if they didn't hospitalise him. At 4:41am on the day of the murder, Davis had called the police, saying he would kill himself or set fire to the Exmouth guesthouse he was staying at if they didn't arrest him.

An ambulance attended and took him to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (RD&E) to be assessed by mental health specialists. One paramedic told the trial that, while in the ambulance, Davis had said he would kill if he didn't get the help he wanted and asked her if there were knives in the hospital kitchen. He was then assessed by two experienced mental health nurses, once again telling them he would harm a member of the public if he was discharged from hospital.

The trial heard how they both were aware of Davis' medical history and concluded that he did not need to be admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act because he was not psychotic. ⚠️ Want the latest Devon breaking news and top stories first?
