When a 17-year-old Naomi Campbell posed for ’s October 1987 issue, the first in an illustrious series of covers, she likely had no idea how legendary her career would become. Now, over thirty years (and countless covers) later, fashion history is for sale as two of the dresses Naomi wore for her shoot are up for auction. On 11 June, will open bidding on Nadia La Valle’s ‘Autumn Fairy’ and ‘Spring Fairy’ dresses, modelled by a young Naomi for ’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ spread.
A Shakespearean fantasy, the whimsical shoot saw Naomi, semi-nude, dancing in an elven garden, surrounded by satyrs, fairies, and tree spirits. The ‘Spring Fairy’ dress is by the auction as ‘formed from panels of pink, pear, grey organza embroidered with fringes of sweet pea blossoms, [with an] asymmetric neckline and sides trimmed with silk leaves and tiny pastel blossoms.’ Naomi posed on a swing to showcase the ‘Autumn Fairy’ dress.
Cut from pink and russet organza, similar adored with petals and blossoms, the garment was a centrepiece for the Michael Roberts photo shoot. The gowns, set to sell for £400-£600, will be accompanied by photographs of the supermodel’s shoot. It would not be the last time Naomi would grace the pages of .
