BUTTE — The Butte 100 has had plenty of firsts in its previous 17 years dating to the inaugural race in 2007. Steve Sevilla is looking for another first in the 18th edition of Butte’s mountain biking race Saturday. If Sevilla completes the 100-mile trek, he will join the 1,000-mile club as the race’s first ever 10-time finisher.

Sevilla first competed in the Butte 100 in 2014 and has raced every year since, outside of the cancelled 2020 COVID year. He joined the 500-mile club in 2018 and has had his eyes on completing 1,000 miles ever since. “That’s something that’s kind of been on the radar ever since I hit the 500-mile club,” Sevilla said.

“Once I hit that, I was like ‘Oh, that’s fun’. I’ve just kept doing it every year since then. It just gave something to shoot for, even though it’s just a number.

Every race is its own event.” Sevilla, 49, has resided in Missoula since 1997 after growing up outside of New York City in Westchester County. Cycling has been a part of his life since childhood and his passion for the sport has only continued to grow.
