Locals on the Greek island of Symi have paid heartbreaking tributes to Michael Mosley as they acknowledged the "tricky" path that he was thought to have become lost on. The 67-year-old was tragically found dead close to the secluded beach resort of Agia Marina on Sunday, on Day Five of the search and rescue operation. Mosley was discovered behind a small wall that circles the resort.

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, explained that if her husband had walked another few yards then he could have reached safety . She explained that he carried out an "incredible climb" and said he "so very nearly made it" before collapsing near a bar, where he was eventually found by staff. Following the tragedy, residents and expats paid their respects on social media and said he left an "incredible legacy".

One person said: "So incredibly sad. Thinking of his family. We know the area quite well and it's doubly sad he was so near safety.

" Another commented: "Very sad news indeed and a very sad day for Symi. Our thoughts are with the whole family." Another local referenced the scorching temperatures which saw the island plunged into an extreme weather warning.

A third person wrote: "So very sad, we're in Symi at the moment and know that path well, it's tricky especially on the heat." One wrote: "This is so very tragic. He’s been on my mind ever since the news of his disappearance emerged.

Though we all knew this could be the outcome it is so heartbreaking to hear this news. Such a wonderful human bein.
