In the remote wilderness, British teenager Jay Slater met his tragic fate. After losing touch with his friend in the mountainous terrain of Masca on the morning of June 17, he vanished without a trace. The night before had been filled with joy, laughter and revelry with his mates in southern Tenerife.
They spent the evening dancing at the Papagayo Beach Club in Playa de las Americas, celebrating the grand finale of the NRG music festival. Just a few hours later, the 19-year-old Lancashire lad found himself stranded, lost and alone over 30km away, in Rural de Teno Park. Encircled by towering gorges and rocky cliffs, Jay decided to undertake the 11-hour trek back to his hotel.
But he never arrived. Today (July 17), off the main road leading further north from the village of Masca, tributes have been left by Jay's family. They were just a stone's throw from the isolated ravine where rescue workers had to cut through undergrowth with machetes to reach their cherished son, reports the Manchester Evening News .
