A protest against which promised hundreds of attendees has fallen slightly short of expectations, with around 50 people showing up. The protest on Saturday, which had attendees crowded under a single beach umbrella, was supposed to represent how busy the beaches in the Balearic Islands get in the high season. Organised by anti-tourism group Majorca Platja Tour (MPT), the protest was supposed to have been , but instead only dozens turned up to Sa Rapita beach in Campos.
reports MPT called for anyone who could not make it to Sa Rapita to go to their favourite beach on the day of the protest under the slogan “#OcupemLesNostresPlatges or ‘let’s occupy our beaches’ in Catalan. An opinion piece in blasted the protest as “a performance”. “There was hardly anyone else there, except about as many representatives of the media as there were of you,” the reporter wrote “Twenty-odd versus another twenty-odd.
" It added: "If anyone's going to get brassed off as a consequence, one suspects it will be the residents and not the tourists. The residents are perfectly capable of 'collapsing' the beaches themselves without the aid of a performance - or tourists, come to that." Despite the lack-lustre turn out for Saturday’s beach-takeover, MPT has promised more action in coming weeks as the summer season heats up and tourism in the region begins to impact daily life.
