UPPER DUBLIN — New league, same results. The Fort Washington Generals have been no strangers to winning in recent years in the Lower Montco Legion league, but there weren’t enough teams for the LML to have a season this summer. So the Generals joined the GNALBL and found themselves playing for a championship.
Top-seeded Fort Washington outlasted No. 5 JP Mascaro 6-5 at Upper Dublin High School on Sunday. “All throughout the playoffs, we’ve had runners on but yesterday when we had our runners on, we didn’t prevail,” Fort Washington center fielder Eric Berman said.
“Today, we prevailed when our runners were in scoring position.” The Generals had beaten JP Mascaro 8-0 in the second round of the playoffs, but the Haulers came back on Saturday to force Sunday’s winner-take-all championship game. While the GNALBL gets two teams into next weekend’s Region 3 tournament, the Haulers opted out of going, making Sunday their season finale.
Although the teams combined for 11 runs, it was not a day filled with offensive highlights. The teams combined for just six hits while walking 24 total batters with five shared errors. Three walks, a sac fly by Ben Clark and a two-run error on Fort Washington’s part gave JP Mascaro a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
