Two men responsible for 11 people going to hospital due to a food poisoning outbreak at their kebab shop have admitted criminal offences today. Contamination at Sami Abdullah and Hassan Saritag's Marmaris Kebab House in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, caused more than 50 people to fall ill, 11 of whom had to go to hospital. Abdullah, the takeaway's director, and his associate Saritag appeared at court on Wednesday, where they admitted placing unsafe food on the market, failing to put in place food safety procedures, and failing to register new owners at the business.
The friends, who will be sentenced at a later date, were told off by District Judge Sophie Toms for speaking in the dock at Newport Magistrates' Court. However, it emerged Saritag, 38, from Abergavenny, had been translating so Abdullah, 46, and from Cwmbran, south Wales, could understand what was being said in court. A Kurdish interpreter will be booked for the sentencing.
