Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone-starrer Kalki 2898 AD has scripted history at the overseas box office. The magnum opus from Nag Ashwin has broken all collection records for Indian films in North America in the opening weekend, collecting a very healthy $11.2 million from the territory.
This has not only helped the film score a historic first weekend but also beat the collection records of several all-time blockbusters. According to Comscore, Kalki 2898 AD earned $11.2 million (Rs 93 crore) gross in US and Canada in its four-day extended weekend.
This is the highest collection ever by an Indian film in the market, beating SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which had earned $10.1 million in 2017. The same director’s RRR is on the third spot with an opening weekend of $9.
5 million in 2022. The catch is that while Kalki has managed its haul in an extended four-day weekend, Rajamouli’s films did it in three. The top five opening weekends by an Indian film in North America is rounded up by two Shah Rukh Khan blockbusters.
Pathaan earned $9.48 million in its five-day weekend last January while Jawan managed $6.1 million in September.
In just four days, Kalki 2898 AD is the highest-grossing Telugu film ever in Canada. It will now eye Baahubali 2’s lifetime haul in US and Canada, which stands at an impressive $20 million. If Kalki manages to get there, it would mean a glorious run overseas, enabling it to potentially beat RRR, Jawan, and KGF Chapter 2.
