KINGSTON, N.Y. — Jury selection is slated to begin Monday, June 3, in the trial of the Saugerties man accused of beating David “Mickey” Myer to death and dumping his body on the side of the road.

Joseph Karolys is charged with first-degree manslaughter, assault, tampering with physical evidence, and attempted bribing of a witness in connection with the Oct. 29, 2022, death of Myer, whose body was found on the side of state Route 32 in Quarryville. During court proceedings Thursday, May 30, Ulster County Judge Bryan Rounds said that based on the significant number of witnesses expected to testify he has set aside three weeks for the trial.

According to witness lists provided to the court, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office has indicated it could call as many as 48 witnesses, including five “expert witnesses.” The defense has said it could call 10 witnesses to the stand. Among the witnesses the prosecution intends to call is Grant Graham, a North Carolina-based blood stain spatter expert.

Graham is expected to testify about the blood spatter patterns found inside the pickup truck Myers was riding in with Karolys, Michael Cummins and Karolys’ 17-year-old son, Joseph A. Karolys. The younger Karolys had been called to a Greene County bar where the three had been drinking to give the trio a ride home.
