Even victories over Oman tomorrow and Namibia on Saturday may not be enough if their net run-rate is still inferior to Scotland’s — with the Scots having the advantage of going into their final group game, against Australia knowing what they will need to do to pip England to the Super Eights. And Buttler warned his team not to fret about net run-rate, but to concentrate on victory — even while admitting England were keeping an eye on a ‘few little bits’ of the maths.

‘I don’t think it’s s*** or bust quite yet,’ he said. ‘First and foremost, we need to win the game against Oman. If we can get ourselves in a position to effect our net run-rate, that’s what we need to do.

‘There’s a realism that we’ve only had one-and-a-quarter games. It’s easy to say we’re in a tough position, but we haven’t played loads. There’s still lots of confide.
