Hollie lost his 15 month battle to Leukemia on May 18, 2024 in the comfort of his home, with family at his side. He was born May 20, 1938 in Laona, WI. Hollie was an all conference, multi-sport athlete at Laona HS.

He went on to play basketball and earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Hollie also received a Master’s degree in Zoology and PhD in Animal Behavior Zoology from Michigan State University in 1965. In 1964 he started his career at the University of Minnesota, Duluth where he spent 30+ years (with an academic emphasis on fish behavior and ecology) teaching, researching, mentoring, and advising undergrad and graduate students where he also received the Horace T.

Morse Award for Outstanding Teaching. His professional accomplishments include contract activity with the U.S.

Forest Service, National Park Service, EPA Support Services and the St. Louis Watershed Commission. He retired to Floodwood, MN in 1997 after building a beautiful log home.

He continued his passion for many loved activities including hunting, fishing, bee keeping, maple syrup making, woodworking, and mushroom foraging. Hollie was a true sports fan, from small children to professional athletes; he never missed a game. Hollie first met his wife of 65 years, Barbara Clark, when they were in kindergarten, that’s where it all began.
