Australia’s top competitive eater scarfed down nearly 10 pounds of hamburgers and hot dogs at a Hickory bar this week. James Webb devours a Bubba & Mert’s Burgers hot dog during a challenge on Monday. Approximately 100 people gathered at the Romeo & Brewliet Tap Room & Pour House in Hickory to watch James Webb.

The Hickory-based food truck Bubba & Mert’s Burgers prepared eight burgers, one pulled pork sandwich and six loaded hot dogs for Webb to eat. Webb also ate four small bags of potato chips. Webb, from Sydney, Australia, finished eating the mound of food in 15 minutes and 11 seconds.

The crowd erupted into applause and cheers as Webb finished his last bite. The empty cups and wrappers left over from James Webb's food challenge. Webb finished eight burgers, a pulled pork sandwich, six hot dogs and four bags of chips in 15 minutes and 11 seconds.

Onlookers were stunned when Webb ate the first double cheeseburger in less than a minute — taking only five bites to devour the sandwich. “Man made a burger disappear,” one man said. As he ate, Webb interacted with the crowd by giving thumbs-ups and encouraging banter.

“Getting full yet,” a man asked while laughing. “Even if I was getting full, I wouldn’t tell you,” Webb said with a smile. The Bubba & Mert’s Burgers food truck has been serving the Hickory area for a little over two years.

Owner Tony Lewis said he grinds the meat for the patties himself. He said he uses various cuts of beef to make his patti.
