The high fibre content of the supplements could end up causing some pretty unpleasant gastrointestinal issues. Gut health experts have issued a word of warning about a popular supplement which could end up causing issues problems due to its iodine and fibre content. Sea moss supplements are rich in fibre and other nutrients such as magnesium, making them a popular choice for people looking to give their health a boost.
However, experts say that they potentially contain some 'hidden dangers' if too much is consumed and people should be cautious when taking them in order to avoid falling ill. Gut health expert Chris Dubberly from Incontinence Shop has highlighted how sea moss could be potentially harmful when it comes to your gut and thyroid, Gloucestershire Live reports. He said: "Sea moss supplements are gaining popularity for their supposed health benefits.
Although the high fibre content in sea moss could benefit digestion for some, too much may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating and diarrhoea. "The iodine found in sea moss also poses some concern for gut health. Although it’s necessary for thyroid function, too much iodine can upset the balance of gut bacteria, leading to gastrointestinal problems, as well as - ironically - hypothyroidism.
"Sea moss also includes prebiotics, which support gut health by growing helpful bacteria. However, too much prebiotic can worsen symptoms for those with certain gut conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)." .
