Despite only exploring the prologue so far, Greedfall 2 shows a lot of promise thanks to a revamped combat system, beautiful world, and engaging side missions. The first Greedfall was the very embodiment of a game with its heart in the right place that never quite came together as well as it should. Was it down to working on a smaller budget compared to other third-party RPGs out at the time? Most certainly.

But this didn’t take away from French developer Spiders’ desire to highlight a historical era not too often seen in games in 18th century mercantilism, complete with a relatively engaging story and characters. That’s why I was delightfully surprised to see Greedfall 2: The Dying World announced back in May, 2022, as the world presented previously seemed ripe to have more stories told within it. Combat-wise, there’s a lot new about this studio’s second crack at the RPG whip.

Judging by my three hours of recent playtime, however, it’s all in aid of another thrilling adventure. Those who skipped 2019’s Greedfall needn’t worry about jumping into this second one; Because while there’s a very clear '2' in its title, in actual fact, The Dying World takes place three years before the first game’s events. Not only is this a clever bit of storytelling that ensures both new and returning players can jump in, it also smartly positions Greedfall 2 as the inverse of the original, in terms of both narrative direction and setting.
