A huge transformation of Newcastle’s historic Grainger Market has taken a crucial step forward. Stunning designs were unveiled earlier this year for a long-awaited revamp of the city centre treasure. The £9 million works, largely paid for through a Levelling Up Fund grant that was awarded back in 2021 and has not yet been spent, include a reinvention of the market’s arcade that could allow it to stage music gigs, plays, and other events.
Further upgrades include new flooring, refurbished toilets, better signage in and outside the market, and automatic sliding doors being installed at 14 of its entrances. The major regeneration works have been slated to begin this summer and there could soon be significant movement on that, after planning permission was officially granted for the project. A council spokesperson said: “The decision to grant Listed Building Consent for the Grainger Market will now allow us to progress fully with the exciting plans we announced in March. These plans will enhance the original features of this Grade 1 listed building, whilst also making significant improvements to create a destination to rival the best European m.
