A little girl lost her life in a freak accident when a broken badminton racket's metal shaft pierced her skull. Lucy Morgan, six, suffered a brain injury in a horrific accident while enjoying a lakeside vacation with her parents and three siblings in Limerick on 1 June. The girl was playing badminton with her 10-year-old brother when the racket suddenly broke down and the sharp aluminium shaft stabbed into her skull.

Lucy was sitting on the sideline and the blow left her "unconscious" and "unresponsive". She was immediately airlifted to the Maine Medical Center in Portland where the surgeons removed part of her skull to relieve pressure on the brain. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 5 June, she succumbed to her injury. Surrounded by her family in the hospital as they sang her favourite hymn for the last time. "This is such a sad, tragic situation," Maine State Police said.

"Our hearts break for the family." Lucy lived with her parents, Bethany and Jesse Morgan, alongside her three other siblings aged from four to 10. Jesse confirmed that the young family was preparing to return to their home in Stockholm, New Jersey, after enjoying a week of kayaking and outdoor activities.
