Garrison Street Community Garden will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday to celebrate recent improvements to the space, including a new fence, mural and several raised beds of edible plants.
Keep Waco Beautiful Executive Director Carole Fergusson said the event will feature speeches about the garden's importance, as well as light refreshments for attendees. She said revitalizing the community garden is just the first step in the nonprofit's new program Creating Green Neighborhoods , and it hopes more spaces in Waco can be used for community gardens in the future. Local artist Vincent Thomas works Tuesday on his mural at the Garrison Street Community Garden, ahead of a ribbon cutting at 11 a.
m. Wednesday to celebrate recent improvements at the garden. Thomas said it took about three days to design the mural and more than two weeks to paint in between rain storms.
"It's a really big transformation," Fergusson said. "We're excited to open up the space and encourage neighbors to utilize it." Keep Waco Beautiful partnered with Waco's chapter of the National Women in Agriculture Association this spring to revitalize the Garrison Street Community Garden.
Through the partnership, Keep Waco Beautiful hosted several work days over the last couple months where over 200 volunteers contributed to the space. The nonprofit estimates volunteers added over $65,000 in economic value to the community garden. Through the new program, the nonprofit was able to raise around $18,00.
