The concept, Yvonne says, is that a sap created by hydrangeas clogs the stems. This prevents water from nourishing the pretty blooms, leading to fewer and less lustrous flowers. Nevertheless, her boiling water technique effectively purges this sap and verifies that the hydrangeas receive their requisite hydration.
She says gardeners should boil some water and decant it into a cup. Each hydrangea stem then needs a 30-second dip into the scalding water. Immediately thereafter, the stems need to be situated into room-temperature water contained within a vase or other vessel.
