Plans for a gelato cafe in South Fremantle, just metres from a popular brewery, have been approved despite locals’ concerns about street parking. The City of Fremantle council unanimously approved changing the use of 384 South Terrace from mixed use to a cafe/restaurant at a meeting last Wednesday night. A staff recommendation that it be refused because of a lack of parking was knocked back after Cr Adin Lang tabled an alternative, arguing the cafe would not attract additional traffic.

The cafe, at the corner of Orient Street and South Terrace, will be open 7am to 10pm Sundays to Fridays and 7am to 11pm Saturdays. It will be headed by local foodie Sergio Guazzelli and serve daily crafted “authentic” Italian gelato.
Guazzelli — who already runs Freo cafe Blink Coffee — said he wanted to give back to the community by serving others. “My name Sergio has roots in Latin; it means to be a servant and to be of service, and that’s exactly what I’ve found myself doing for the last 25 years,” he said. “I’m happiest when making other people happy and making sure that they as a customer are feeling appreciated and valued.
“This South Fremantle precinct offers everything — hospitality, a great bakery, restaurants, breweries, wine bars which are built on authentic Italian cuisine and even a couple simply old-fashioned Aussie pubs, but not one single venue (is an) ice-cream or Ita.
