Xander Bogaerts’ day was cut short when he suffered a shoulder injury in the San Diego Padres ’ win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday. In the bottom of the third inning, Bogaerts dove for a ball and was immediately in pain from the play. The former Boston Red Sox shortstop remained down briefly before a trainer came out to tend to him.

Bogaerts got to his feet, but was doubled over favoring his left shoulder. After trying to move it around, Bogaerts left the game. Padres manager Mike Shildt provided an update on Bogaerts after the win.

“So far we’re gonna get some more imaging. But the initial imaging is negative,” he told reporters in Atlanta. “He’s got stability, more than it looked like he migh have.

He’s got some strength and some range of motion. More time will tell. The initial feedback is the best-case scenario.

” Shildt also added that it’s too soon to tell whether Bogaerts will need a stint on the injured list. Bogaerts’ injury happened in similar fashion to that of Trevor Story’s, who underwent season-ending surgery after diving for a ball earlier this season . While it’s unclear if Bogaerts will have a similar outcome as Story, it’s still a blow to San Diego’s lineup.

The Padres signed Bogaerts to an 11-year, $280 million contract ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. It’s been a difficult start to the 2024 campaign for Bogaerts with just four home runs, 14 RBI and a .220 batting average.
