THERE were emotional scenes during a desperately sad day for the country as two beloved RTE broadcasters were laid to rest. The sombre day saw the funeral of legendary commentator Micheal O Muircheartaigh take place in Kerry , while veteran broadcaster Tommie Gorman was also laid to rest in Sligo. O Muircheartaigh died on Tuesday morning, aged 93, in a Dublin hospital, surrounded by family members, as Gorman also passed away on the same day following a sudden death aged just 68.
Iconic GAA voice O Muircheartaigh was described as a grandfather to the nation to mourners at his funeral, while journalist Tommie was remembered for his "great nobility”. O Muircheartaigh's funeral mass, which was conducted in both Irish and English, was held at St Mary’s Church in Dingle in his beloved Co Kerry before burial in nearby St Brendan’s Cemetery. His coffin was draped in a Kerry flag as it was brought into the church ahead of the service, which was attended by Tanaiste Micheal Martin and GAA President Jarlath Burns.
President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Simon Harris were represented by their respective aide de camps. The funeral heard how the voice of the former RTE broadcaster was synonymous with the GAA during a career that spanned six decades. In his homily, Fr Michael Moynihan said O Muircheartaigh had lived a “remarkable” life.
