New bits and bobs are being discovered all the time with Elden Ring and its huge open world. Shadow of the Erdtree is the newest piece to the puzzle, and the Realm of Shadow introduces so much new lore, , and dozens of new bosses. One of the newest introductions are Spirit Eels, who caught the attention of the community and were quickly propelled to a culty-meme status.

As with all things From Software, there’s much more to these little blue Frubes than meets the eye. Zullie has been working with the game files and extracting as much information as possible. In doing so, they have discovered that they are not just ephemeral parasites poking their heads out of the ground as a Spotted Garden Eel does, but that they also have weird anthropomorphic feet hooked into the dirt.

Data names the mob as Rei Chinago, translated as Spirit Eels. Zullie notes the similarities that they have with Spotted Garden Eels, which poke their heads out of sand and water. The data-miner also notes further similarities with Kodama, “Japanese forest spirits often drawn with similar.
