“Summer, summer, summertime." If you were a '90s teen, I’m fairly sure you just sang that. One of the best things about summer in the Yakima Valley is our access to fresh produce, more specifically the variety of delicious, hometown-rooted-and-ripened fresh fruit.
We are absolutely spoiled around here when it comes to availability and variety. Cherries, apples, peaches, plums, pluots, nectarines, pears, berries, melons and apricots grown right in our proverbial backyard. And that, folks, is one of many Pacific Northwest luxuries, all thanks to generations of steadfast local farmers and of course, hard-working farmworkers.
How do you get your hands on this local bounty? Luckily for us there are a number of ways. I have subscribed to Pacific Northwest Fresh produce box for years. It is a hand-curated produce box delivered straight to your front door with seasonal, local organic fruits and vegetables all year long with local add-ons such as honey, mushrooms, fresh roasted coffee, smoked garlic and baked goods.
It’s as simple as going to their website, picking a box size and that’s it — the box shows up once a week with your fresh produce. If you like to touch, see and smell your fruits, the downtown Yakima Farmers Market is an excellent opportunity to do so. It is open every Sunday from 9 a.
m. to 1 p.m.
at Rotary Marketplace, 15 W. Yakima Ave. Perhaps the weekend doesn’t work for you.
No worries. We have several fruit stands throughout the valley open seven days a we.
