Rumours of a new Doom game being announced next month continue to pile up and it sounds like it has a medieval setting. The original idea behind Microsoft buying Bethesda was that all the games would become Xbox console exclusives. Microsoft has always been reluctant to admit that but information from the FTC legal battle year made it clear Xbox boss Phil Spencer had made the decision as early as 2021 .

However, that was before current concerns about declining console sales and the embracing of multiformat releases and now the first new release from Bethesda, of a series that was previously released on all formats, is apparently also coming to PlayStation. A new Doom game has been rumoured for years, but it’s never been officially acknowledged and is expected to make its debut at the Xbox Games Showcase next month, with two separate sources suggesting it will also be on PlayStation 5 . Initially rumoured with the name Doom: Year Zero, it’s believed the final name of the game will be Doom: The Dark Ages.

There’s little indication of what the game will be about, other than shooting demons in the face with a shotgun, but apparently it’s been in development for four years and takes place in a ‘medieval inspired doom world.’ The previous game, Doom Eternal , already had a medieval motif in some areas, so that description could mean just about anything, but it does seem to hint at either time travel or some kind of prequel. There was no mention of the game being release.
