Resolve director Jim Reed says that “many voters will be aghast” at Peter Dutton’s rising popularity (“ Dutton edges ahead as voters thump Labor on economy ”, 17/6) relative to Anthony Albanese. Many voters clearly dislike Dutton and, as Reed suggests, they are very unlikely to ever support him. However, I can see that there are large numbers of voters who are less fixed in their views.
They do not see Dutton as someone to be ridiculed for advancing policies such as nuclear energy. What Dutton did in former Coalition governments is largely irrelevant to them. Rather, they see a man who they believe is trying harder to keep them safe and secure than a timid government that seems scared of its own shadow.
Labor has lots of rusted-on supporters who love Albanese, Penny Wong and Jim Chalmers, but they are not the people who will determine the result of the next election. Rod Wise, Surrey Hills Warning for Labor Anthony Albanese and the federal Labor government should consider the most-recent survey by Resolve Strategic as a shot across the bows. Labor needs to change direction, or at least tweak its policies.
The Resolve survey showed that the Opposition Leader, Peter Dutton, is now voters’ preferred leader, and that the electorate is.
