Hailey Sellers running ahead of the pack to the finish line was a frequent enough sight during her freshman season with the cross country and track teams at The Branson School. On Sunday, her father, Scott, expects to be part of the pack trying to keep up with Hailey during the 113th Dipsea Race. Both Scott and Hailey Sellers are accomplished runners, but Sunday will be a new experience for both of them, as neither has competed in the race before.
“I am super excited to run the Dipsea, as I have been a Marin runner for 20 years,” Scott Sellers said. “I run with a group of guys in Larkspur who regularly run the Dipsea but I had never run the race myself. I have been thinking about applying and entering the race for a few years, but it was Hailey’s interest in running the race that motivated me to do it this year.
” The 2024 Dipsea field of roughly 1,500 runners is scheduled to take off at 8 a.m. Sunday from the start line in downtown Mill Valley, where runners are immediately met with the first of many challenges.
The Dipsea Steps, three towering flights of stairs, lead in to a 7.4-mile course with grueling elevation changes. It’s a beautiful trail for a relaxed hike, but a physically punishing race experience.
The reward? For some, a trophy or a black shirt. For everyone who finishes, a chance to take a dip in the ocean waters and bask in the glow of completing the race. Hailey Sellers established personal-best marks in the 400 meters (1:02.
51), 800 (2:31.12), 1,60.
