Culture | Gaming Almost 20 years after its original release, Capcom has announced a remaster of zombie action-fest Dead Rising. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will come to PC, PlayStation 5 , and Xbox Series consoles on September 19. It’s a sprawling zombie game set in a Colorado mall.

You have to slice through crowds of zombies to stay alive and rescue the few remaining survivors of the outbreak. Tweaks for this new version include auto-saving, a refreshed interface, and improved non-player character behaviour. This should make the game more palatable in 2024, because Dead Rising has a lot of escort missions in which you have to lead around survivors with seemingly next-to-zero intelligence.

The original version was released in 2006 and this latest release is the second time Dead Rising has been remastered. A higher-resolution version of the game was released as part of the Dead Rising Triple Pack for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It included the original Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.

Capcom seems keen to stress this Deluxe Remaster version does not change the gameplay of the original Dead Rising dramatically. Instead, it’s a port of the game to Capcom’s RE engine, first used for Resident Evil 7. That engine also powers Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Resident Evil 4 remake.
